After four decades inside Houlton Regional Hospital, the Health Services Foundation is moving to a new downtown location as of Monday. The hospital needed extra space to support its expanding services, but hospital leadership emphasizes their respect and ongoing partnership with the foundation, dismissing rumors of a split.

The foundation, led by executive director Lori Weston, will continue its mission of raising money for healthcare through popular events like the Festival of Trees and the upcoming County Open Charity Golf Tournament. Both institutions remain dedicated to supporting the health needs of the community from their respective spaces.

When Jason and Jennifer Grass of Fort Fairfield turned their pepper hobby into The Hill Gardens hot sauce business, they didn’t expect a bold retail move would bring them greater happiness—and booming sales. With over 27 varieties from berry-infused milds to their legendary 2.1 million Scoville Dragon’s Breath, the Grasses have created a passionate following in Maine and beyond.

After experiencing the rush to fill orders for more than 20 retailers, they noticed their love for crafting unique flavors was getting lost. Some partnerships weren’t paying off, and expired bottles gathered dust. The solution? Prune back: they cut their retail presence to just three to seven locations, focusing more on direct sales and strong local relationships. Instead of chasing shelf space, The Hill Gardens now collaborates with local farms, participates in the vibrant Presque Isle farmers market, and even works with restaurants such as The Maple Pig.

This strategic downscaling let them double wholesale sales and maintain steady retail demand—while freeing time to experiment with ingredients like plantains, apples, and even pumpkin spice. Their new taste-challenge boxes add a playful spin for customers. Best of all, the Grasses say they’re happier, closer to their community, and doing what they love.
