Firefighters in Oregon are racing against the clock as strong winds and dry conditions threaten to intensify two of the state’s largest wildfires. The Akawa Butte Fire, which ignited near the town of Sisters after a lightning strike, has already scorched over 40 square miles and destroyed homes, with roughly half of the town’s 3,800 residents told to prepare for possible evacuation. This fire has been named the nation’s top wildfire priority, unlocking access to resources from other states and abroad. Governor Tina Kotek emphasized the urgency, with more than 1,000 firefighters engaged and more reinforcements arriving to contain the blaze that’s produced massive flames and even its own lightning-generating cloud formation. The National Weather Service has issued a red-flag warning in central Oregon through Saturday, warning that low humidity and warm winds could fuel the fires further. The next 24 to 48 hours are the most critical for those living near Sisters, as officials intensify containment efforts on both the Akawa Butte Fire and the even larger Rowe Creek Complex, which has burned through hundreds of square miles since mid-July. Air quality is already suffering as smoke from dozens of fires spreads across the state and beyond. |

A bipartisan bill cosponsored by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins is making headway in the Senate, aiming to limit insulin costs to $35 per month for patients with private insurance. The proposal, which advanced through the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee by a wide margin, seeks to address high insulin prices nationwide.
Maine already enacted a similar law in 2020, capping monthly insulin costs for about 267,000 people—roughly a fifth of the state's insured population. The national bill would build on this by also launching a pilot program in 10 yet-to-be-named states, allowing uninsured patients to buy insulin at the same capped price.
With over 38 million Americans affected by diabetes—116,500 of them in Maine—the cost of insulin remains a pressing concern. The bill now heads to the full Senate for further consideration, raising hopes among advocates and patients for broader and more affordable access to this crucial medication. |
